How Long Does an Eighth Last? The Math by Format and Usage Pattern
An eighth is 3.5 grams of flower, and how long it lasts depends on two numbers: how many grams each format uses, and how often you use it. At roughly a third of a gram per average joint, an eighth works out to about 10 to 11 joints; at half a gram, 7; at a full gram, 3 and a half. A patient using a quarter gram once a day gets about two weeks from an eighth, while someone using a gram a day gets three or four days. The rest of this guide shows the math so you can plug in your own numbers.
Quick answer
- An eighth of an ounce is 3.5 g. A quarter is 7 g, a half is 14 g and an ounce is 28 g (Benzinga).
- A 2016 study by University of Pennsylvania and RAND researchers estimated the average joint holds 0.32 g of flower, lower than the 0.5 g figure federal agencies had used (ScienceDaily summary of the study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence).
- Pre-rolls sold in Oklahoma dispensaries are usually labeled 0.5 g or 1 g, so an eighth equals 7 half-gram pre-rolls or 3.5 full-gram ones.
- A typical pipe bowl holds about 0.25 to 0.5 g, and a dry-herb vaporizer chamber about 0.1 to 0.25 g, so those formats stretch an eighth furthest.
- The compliance label shows net weight in grams; our guide to reading an Oklahoma cannabis label explains where to find it.
How many grams does each format use?
Flower does not come with a serving size, so the first step is knowing roughly how much each method uses per fill. These are working ranges, not rules, and your own habits will land somewhere inside or outside them.
- Joint, hand-rolled: 0.3 to 0.5 g is typical; the 0.32 g average above came from a large national survey data set.
- Pre-roll: whatever the label says, most often 0.5 g or 1 g. Multipacks of 0.5 g, and smaller "dog walker" sizes around 0.35 g, are common across Oklahoma menus; see our pre-rolls page for how we list them.
- Pipe or one-hitter bowl: about 0.25 to 0.5 g for a standard bowl; a one-hitter holds closer to 0.1 g.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: 0.1 to 0.25 g per chamber for most portable units, and the same material is often used for more than one session.
- Blunt: 1 g or more, which is why a single blunt can be more than a quarter of an eighth.
The math: an eighth by usage pattern
Divide 3.5 g by the grams you use per day. That is the whole formula. Some common results:
- 0.1 g per day (one small vaporizer chamber): about 35 days.
- 0.25 g per day (one pipe bowl): about 14 days.
- 0.32 g per day (one average joint): about 11 days.
- 0.5 g per day (one half-gram pre-roll): 7 days.
- 1 g per day (one full-gram pre-roll, or two bowls and a joint): 3 to 4 days.
- 0.5 g three times a week (an occasional-use pattern): about 2 weeks.
If you use flower more than once a day, add the fills together before dividing. Two 0.25 g bowls plus one 0.32 g joint is 0.82 g a day, so an eighth lasts a little over four days at that pace.
Why an eighth sometimes feels short
Three things make an eighth run out faster than the arithmetic predicts.
- Grinder loss. Fine material and kief collect in the grinder teeth and catch screen. Over an eighth that can be a tenth of a gram or more, which is why patients who clean their grinder regularly notice they get an extra bowl.
- Moisture loss. Flower is weighed at packaging. If the jar sits open or in a dry room, it loses water weight and volume, and what looks like a short eighth may just be a dry one. Our guide to storing cannabis properly covers humidity packs and containers.
- Spillage. Loose grind left on a tray or in a bag adds up over a week.
Weighing your eighth at home on a 0.01 g scale, before you grind it, is the simplest way to know what you actually started with. See our accessories page for the basics we stock.
When a quarter or more makes sense
The per-gram price usually falls as the weight goes up, which is why many Oklahoma menus list eighths, quarters, halves and ounces side by side. Bulk only saves money if the flower stays fresh long enough to use it. A patient on a 0.25 g per day pattern uses an eighth in two weeks and a quarter in a month, which is within the window a sealed jar with a humidity pack will hold up. The same patient buying an ounce is looking at nearly four months, and the last third of that jar will not be what it was.
Oklahoma's per-transaction limit is 3 ounces of flower, and the possession limit at a residence is 8 ounces, so quantity is rarely the constraint for most patients; freshness and budget are. Our post on Oklahoma purchase and possession limits has the full breakdown, and the OMMA website is the place to confirm current rules.

FAQ
How many joints are in an eighth?
About 10 to 11 at the 0.32 g research average, 7 at a half gram each, or 3 and a half at a full gram each. Pre-rolls are labeled by weight, so the count is exact: an eighth equals seven 0.5 g pre-rolls.
How many bowls are in an eighth?
Roughly 7 to 14, depending on bowl size. A standard pipe bowl holds about 0.25 to 0.5 g.
Is an eighth always exactly 3.5 grams?
An eighth of an ounce is 3.54 g, and the industry rounds to 3.5 g. The net weight printed on the Oklahoma compliance label is the number that counts, so read the label rather than assume.
Does a dry-herb vaporizer really stretch an eighth further?
Yes, because the chamber holds less flower (often 0.1 to 0.25 g) and heats it evenly rather than burning it, so many patients get more sessions per gram. Whether that format suits you is covered in our comparison of flower, vapes and edibles.
Should I buy a quarter instead of two eighths?
Usually the quarter costs less per gram, but only if you will use 7 g before it dries out. At a quarter gram a day, that is about a month, which most sealed containers with a humidity pack can handle.
