Dispensary Etiquette: 10 Things Budtenders Wish Every Patient Knew
1. Have your card and ID out before you reach the desk
Every visit starts with check-in: your OMMA license (or approval email) and a government ID. Having both in hand keeps the line moving and gets you to the counter faster.
2. Know what you can ask
Anything about the product. Onset, duration, potency, terpenes, how a cart tastes, what the staff would pick for a Sunday afternoon versus a Friday night. Budtenders in Oklahoma cannot give medical advice or make claims about treating conditions — that is the law, not reluctance — so frame questions around the product and your preferences and you will get better answers.
3. Come in with a format in mind
"Something for the evening" is a fine start, but "a pre-roll or a cart, whichever is cheaper per session" gets you there in half the time. If you are undecided, our post on flower vs vape vs edible is a two-minute read.
4. Check the menu before you arrive
The live menu shows what is in stock and what it costs. Knowing the price also means one trip to the ATM, not two. Ordering ahead is faster still — our guide to ordering online for pickup walks through it.
5. Do not open packages in the store
Every product leaves the store sealed with its compliance label intact. Staff can describe it and show you the label; the product you buy stays sealed until you are off the premises.
6. Keep phones respectful
Ask before photographing anything, and never film staff or other patients. Everyone in a dispensary is a medical patient, and privacy matters.
7. Do not consume on the premises
Oklahoma prohibits consumption at the dispensary, and that includes the parking lot. Public smoking restrictions apply as soon as you step outside.
8. Bring the right payment
Most Oklahoma dispensaries are cash-based. We accept cash and have an ATM inside. Our post on paying at a Norman dispensary explains why.
9. Know the limits
Three ounces of flower, one ounce of concentrate and 72 ounces of edibles per transaction. Staff will stop you at the line — it is the law, not a judgment. Our post on Oklahoma dispensary purchase limits explains how products count.
10. Say what worked (and what did not)
Feedback is how a good dispensary gets better. If a product you tried last week was great, tell the budtender; if it was harsh or weak, tell them that too. It shapes what we reorder and what we recommend to the next patient. And if you had a good visit, a Google review is the single most helpful thing you can do for a local store.
The short version
Card ready, format in mind, menu checked, cash in hand, packages sealed, consume at home. Do that and you will be in and out in minutes with something you actually want. First visit ever?
