Norman has more dispensaries than coffee shops

That is barely an exaggeration. Oklahoma has long had more dispensaries per capita than any other state, and Norman — a college town of about 130,000 built around the University of Oklahoma — is no exception.

For patients, that is mostly good news: prices are low, selection is wide, and stores compete hard for your business. It also means the gap between the best shop in town and the worst is enormous. Here is what to check before you choose.

1. Find the OMMA license

Every legal dispensary in Oklahoma holds a license from the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority, and it should be posted where you can see it. Licensed shops sell only products that have passed state-mandated lab testing. If you cannot find a license number on the storefront, the website or the Weedmaps listing, keep driving.

2. Check the menu before you go

A good dispensary publishes a live menu with real prices and real stock. That saves you a trip, and it tells you something about the store: a menu that shows brand names, potency and current pricing is a menu maintained by people who pay attention. Vague menus with no prices usually mean pricing gets decided at the counter.

3. Freshness comes from turnover

Flower is an agricultural product. It dries out, terpenes evaporate, and a jar that has sat under lights for two months tastes like it. The stores with the freshest flower are the ones that sell the most flower, because their stock turns quickly.

4. Brand selection tells you who the store buys from

Oklahoma has hundreds of growers and processors. Dispensaries that stock established Oklahoma brands are buying from producers with a track record of consistent testing and consistent product. 5. Pricing should be transparent

6. Staff should ask questions, not just ring you up

The difference between a great budtender and a cashier is whether they ask what you are looking for. Onset time, duration, dose and format matter more than a strain name, and good staff will steer you toward something that fits — even when it costs less than what you walked in for. 7. Hours and location narrow the field fast

8. Read reviews the right way

Star ratings are useful; volume is more useful. A 4.9 from twelve reviews tells you less than a 4.8 from six hundred. Look for recent reviews that mention specific products, specific staff and repeat visits. You can read what patients say about us on our reviews page or on Google.

9. Know how you will pay
