Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Caregiver License: Who Qualifies and How It Works

What a caregiver license is

Oklahoma's medical marijuana program includes a license for caregivers: people who purchase, transport and possess medical marijuana on behalf of a licensed patient who cannot do it themselves. It exists for homebound patients, patients with disabilities, and minor patients, whose parents or guardians handle purchases.

A caregiver does not consume the product. The license lets them act for the patient — nothing more.

Who qualifies

• Oklahoma resident, age 18 or older.
• Proof of identity, proof of residency and an acceptable photo, the same as a patient application.
• A patient who needs one. For adult patients, the physician who signs the patient's recommendation form must complete the section certifying that a caregiver is necessary. Minor patients' parents or legal guardians are handled through the minor license process.

An adult patient may designate one caregiver. A minor patient may have up to two.

How to apply

1. The patient's physician certifies the need for a caregiver on the Physician Recommendation Form.
2. Patient and caregiver both sign a Caregiver Designation Form.
3. The caregiver applies through the OMMA MedPortal with the designation form, photo, ID and proof of residency.

There is no application fee for a caregiver license. Processing follows the standard patient timeline of up to 14 business days.

How long it lasts

A caregiver license is tied to the patient. It expires when the patient's license expires, up to a maximum of two years, and it renews alongside the patient's renewal — see our guide to renewing an Oklahoma medical marijuana card.

Shopping as a caregiver

At the counter, the process is the same as for a patient: present your caregiver license (or OMMA approval email) and a government ID, and the dispensary verifies your status in the state system. A few things caregivers ask us

Can I shop for myself on my caregiver license? No. A caregiver license only covers purchases for the designated patient. If you are also a patient, you need your own patient license.

Can I keep products at my house? Caregivers may possess medical marijuana on behalf of their patient within the legal limits. Keep it in its original labeled packaging and separate from anything else.

What if my patient changes physicians? The caregiver certification comes from the physician recommendation on file. A new recommendation should include the caregiver section again.
