How to Renew Your Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Card (and the 2026 Rule That Trips People Up)

When to start

Oklahoma medical marijuana patient licenses are valid for two years. OMMA accepts renewal applications up to 30 days before your expiration date, and its processing window is up to 14 business days. Start on day one of that window. If your license expires before the renewal is approved, the state system shows you as expired and no dispensary can sell to you until it clears.

Check the expiration date printed on your card now and set a reminder 45 days ahead of it — long enough to book a physician visit before the application window opens.

What you need

Renewing is essentially a fresh application:

1. A new physician recommendation. Your original one does not carry over. A recommendation is valid for 30 days from the date it is signed, so get it right before you apply.
2. A new photo, taken within the last six months and meeting OMMA's photo requirements. Reusing your original photo gets the application rejected.
3. Proof of identity — a valid Oklahoma driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, or another form OMMA accepts.
4. Proof of Oklahoma residency.
5. The fee: $100 plus a $4.30 processing charge. If you are enrolled in Medicaid (SoonerSelect) or Medicare, or are a 100% disabled veteran, the fee is $20 plus $2.50 with proof of enrollment or status.

Log in to the OMMA MedPortal with the same email you used for your original application. If you have lost access to that email, call OMMA before you start.

The 2026 rule that catches people out

As of January 1, 2026, Oklahoma requires every physician who recommends medical marijuana to complete state-approved education and register with OMMA. A recommendation from a physician who is not registered is not valid, and applications built on one are rejected — after you have already paid for the consultation.

Before you book, confirm the physician is registered. OMMA publishes a list of registered physicians on its website, and any clinic that does this regularly will tell you up front.

After you submit

• OMMA emails you when the renewal is approved.
• Your new card comes by mail. In the meantime, OMMA allows the approval email or the approval shown in MedPortal to serve as valid identification at dispensaries, and dispensaries verify your status in the state system rather than relying on the printed expiration date.
• Bring your government ID either way.

If you let it lapse

There is no late fee for patients, but during the gap you are not a licensed patient: you cannot purchase at any dispensary, and the legal protections that come with the license are tied to it being active. Treat the expiration date as a hard deadline.

Caregivers renew too

A caregiver license expires with the patient's license it is attached to. If you have a designated caregiver, they will need to renew alongside you, and your physician will need to certify the caregiver again on the new recommendation form.
